چکیده

We characterize the dynamical behavior of continuous-time, Markovian quantum systems with respect to a subsystem of interest. Markovian dynamics accurately describes a wide class of open quantum systems of relevance to quantum information processing, subsystem encodings offering a general pathway for faithfully representing quantum information. We provide explicit linear-algebraic characterizations of the notion of invariant and noiseless subsystem for Markovian master equations, under different robustness assumptions for model parameter and initial state variations. The stronger concept of an attractive quantum subsystem is introduced, and sufficient existence conditions are identified based on Lyapunov’s stability techniques. As a main control application, we address the potential of output-feedback Markovian control strategies for quantum pure state-stabilization and noiseless-subspace generation. In particular, explicit results for the synthesis of stabilizing semigroups and noiseless subspaces in finite-dimensional Markovian systems are obtained.

Analysis and synthesis of attractive quantum Markovian dynamics

We propose a general framework for investigating a large class of stabilization problems in Markovian quantum systems. Building on the notions of invariant and attractive quantum subsystem, we characterize attractive subspaces by exploring the structure of the invariant sets for the dynamics. Our general analysis results are exploited to assess the ability of open-loop Hamiltonian and output-fe...

Non-positive Semigroup Dynamics in Continuous Variable Models

Non-positive, Markovian semigroups are sometimes used to describe the time evolution of subsystems immersed in an external environment. A widely adopted prescription to avoid the appearance of negative probabilities is to eliminate from the admissible initial conditions those density matrices that would not remain positive by the action of the semigroup dynamics. Using a continuous variable mod...

Ognyan OreshkovDedication To Iskra ii Acknowledgements

This thesis examines seven topics in quantum information and the theory of open quantum systems. The first topic concerns weak measurements and their universality as a means of generating quantum measurements. It is shown that every generalized measurement can be decomposed into a sequence of weak measurements which allows us to think of measurements as resulting form continuous stochastic proc...

Efficient simulation of sparse Markovian quantum dynamics

Quantum algorithms for simulating Hamiltonian dynamics have been extensively developed, but there has been much less work on quantum algorithms for simulating the dynamics of open quantum systems. We give the first efficient quantum algorithms for simulating Markovian quantum dynamics generated by Lindbladians that are not necessarily local. We introduce two approaches to simulating sparse Lind...

Topological field theory of dynamical systems.

Here, it is shown that the path-integral representation of any stochastic or deterministic continuous-time dynamical model is a cohomological or Witten-type topological field theory, i.e., a model with global topological supersymmetry (Q-symmetry). As many other supersymmetries, Q-symmetry must be perturbatively stable due to what is generically known as non-renormalization theorems. As a resul...
